At First Church, we believe that the journey of faith is one of lifelong learning – questioning and probing our doubts and certainties so we might hear the God who still speaks to the world today. Through the course of the year, we meet together in various settings to explore our faith through bible study, book groups, discussions, and DVD-series.
WEDNESDAYS, DECEMBER 4 AND 11, 10:45AM – NOON
Join both Pastor Nanette Pitt and Associate Minister Antigoné Lowery at either our morning or evening groups held in the Library and Conference Room respectively for an exploration of the core themes of the Advent season – hope, peace, joy, and love – through the lens of scripture and the writings of Christian thinkers. For copyright reasons, advance copies of each week’s readings can’t be made available on our website, we apologize. Please email Kasey Kalchert if you plan to attend and would like the readings in advance. This is not, however, required.
ADVENT DEVOTIONAL – Rise Up, Shepherd!
This Advent season, we are reading Luke A. Powery’s Rise Up, Shepherd! Advent Reflections on the Spirituals. Copies are available in the church office for a suggested donation of $9, or may be sourced from your favorite bookseller. “African American spirituals give us profound insights into the human condition and the Christian life. In these devotions for the season of Advent, Luke Powery leads the reader through the spirituals as they confront the mystery of incarnation and redemption. In Rise Up, Shepherd!, each devotion features the lyrics of the spiritual, a reflection on the spiritual’s meaning, a Scripture verse, and a brief prayer.”
On Wednesday, December 18, we will gather for a Service of Hope and Healing. No Faith Enrichment programming will be offered on this day nor on the following two Wednesdays – Christmas or New Year’s days. Programming will resume again on January 8, 2020.
